Atkins designs on Triton Knoll

UK engineering consultancy Atkins is to design the monopile foundations for Innogy’s 860MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm off the UK east coast.

Atkins has been subcontracted by the foundation supplier – a joint venture between Smulders and Sif – to design 90 monopiles for the MHI Vestas V164-9.5MW turbines and two structures for the offshore substations.

Proposal for turbines in 30 m/s winds

The power produced by any given wind turbine varies with the third power of the wind speed. Therefore, an 8-MW turbine designed for the North Sea would theoretically produce over 140 MW if taken into the Roaring Forties. It would obviously have to be strengthened considerably (Wilson proposed a new type of wind turbine that should be more reliable in high winds) but if we lower the power output to 50 MW per turbine there would still be vastly more available energy to power all the earth’s needs almost forever.

China's largest wind turbine installation vessel, the "Longyuan Zhenhua 3", could boost international cooperation in the South China Sea, experts said Sunday. 

The vessel, which went into trial service on Sunday in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu Province, has a lifting capacity of 2,000 tons, making it the largest of this kind in the world, currently, news site people.cn reported.

Building offshore wind farms is outrageously expensive, especially for the nascent U.S. wind industry which is on a steep learning curve. The only wind farm in U.S. waters is reported to have cost around $300 million for five turbines with a modest combined capacity of 30 MW. Obviously, costs will have to come down if the industry is to grow. Even though the European developers have been working in offshore wind longer, they have also struggled with costs.

Operated by Statoil in partnership with Masdar, the 30 MW wind farm consists of five 6 MW turbines and is located 25 kilometers offshore Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and will power approximately 20,000 households.

Hywind Scotland, the world’s first floating offshore windfarm, has started to deliver electricity to the Scottish grid, having been formally opened by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

The 30 MW windfarm, operated by Statoil in partnership with Masdar, is 25 km offshore Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

International engineering and operations support services contractor ODE, an integral part of the DORIS Group, has been awarded two Framework Agreements for Electrical Project Management, and for Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) Project Engineering and associated Project and Interface Management.

The framework agreements will run until 2021 and apply to Vattenfall WindKraft, its subsidiaries and affiliated companies across Europe, including the United Kingdom, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.
