This time, the stars could not have been better aligned. China had accumulated excess stock of renewable energy hardware. Too many factories were churning out solar panels and wind turbines to fulfill Beijing’s clean energy dreams.

 The Chinese government had earlier declared that it intended to spend a whopping $360 billion on renewable energy wherewithal, such as solar panel and wind turbines, by 2020. On the demand end, energy-hungry India was positioning itself to absorb a significant portion of this surplus.

Virginia is looking for plans to create an infrastructure blueprint for offshore wind energy – a move local advocates and experts say could lead to more development and larger projects.

Gov. Ralph Northam announced May 22 the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy was looking for proposals. Hampton Roads – with its port infrastructure and workforce – was touted by Northam as an ideal location for wind energy.

“Virginia should be the prime location for the offshore wind industry, from the supply chain to the full build-out of our offshore wind assets off the coast,” Northam said in the release.

Developing a Plan to Position Virginia as the East Coast Offshore Wind Supply Chain and Service Industry Location of Choice

The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) has posted a Request For Proposals (RFP) from qualified contractors to develop a plan to position Virginia as the East Coast offshore wind supply chain and service industry location of choice.

This Request for Proposals (RFP) seeks expertise in offshore wind (OSW) development, particularly as it relates to the industry supply chain, port infrastructure requirements, build-out of the various OSW supply chain sectors, and long-term maritime service needs.  The work product that the successful applicant (Contractor) produces in accordance with the RFP will inform OSW development firms, the Virginia maritime industry, and state and local decision-makers.

A new GBP 900k joint industry project is set to explore the technical, regulatory and societal issues of using autonomous surface vessels, integrated with existing manned shipping operations, to support offshore wind farm operations and maintenance. The ultimate goal of the 18-month Windfarm Autonomous Ship Project (WASP) is to develop a timeline for the phased introduction of autonomous vessels.

The world's largest and most powerful offshore wind turbine will test its wings at an innovative facility in northeast England.

The 12-megawatt Haliade-X, developed by GE Renewable Energy, stands 853 feet tall, or about three times the height of the Flat Iron building in New York City. Its massive rotor diameter of 722 feet is roughly the tower height of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge above water.

GE touts that a single one of these turbines can generate enough power to supply 16,000 European households. A 750-megawatt wind farm configuration could produce enough power for up to 1 million home

Acta Marine’s Newbuild Completes Sea Trials

The SOV W2W vessel Acta Auriga, currently under construction at Ulstein Verft, Norway for owner Acta Marine, has successfully completed sea trials. The walk-to-work vessel is custom-designed for the offshore energy industry. 

Together with a 3D crane, SMST gangway and elevator tower, and the X-BOW and X-STERN design solutions, the vessel will break new grounds in workability, in-field agility, offshore logistics and comfort on board for 120 persons combined with a low fuel consumption, the builder said. 

The vessel, of Ulstein’s SX195 design, has returned to the construction yard for completion before delivery to Acta Marine.
