Innovative Inspection of Offshore Foundations

Using Interfering Sound Waves for Monopile Investigation

Offshore wind farm operators face a challenge when trying to establish the integrity of the monopile-transition piece interface which has been used in 80% of turbines constructed before 2012. A key focus is the layer of grout which bonds the two steel sections of the structure, the integrity of which could affect the turbine’s long-term stability. Uniper Technologies, working with a team from the British Geological Survey, has developed a system, the first of its kind, which uses interfering sound waves to investigate the monopile-transition piece underwater and highlight any areas of defective or missing grout. The system, which has been successfully trialled at sea, was a winner of the recent Subsea Inspection competition organised by the Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator. Importantly the technique can inspect the structure from a single surface and within the tight timescales required for offshore procedures. Inspection data is interpreted and shared in a transparent format.

Following successful wind-turbine blade inspections at Sheringham Shoal, Martek Aviation have been awarded a two-year Framework Contract with SSE Plc to inspect their 683 wind turbines across 47 sites throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).

Drone inspections

According to Martek Aviation, UAS’s make aerial surveys more accessible, affordable, and easier to perform, enabling critical infrastructure inspections to be carried out in minutes. Drone platforms can also be deployed in areas which are difficult or dangerous for surveying personnel to access, making them suitable for more challenging offshore applications.

The Framework Contract, starting next month, covers inspection of a variety of wind turbines, each with three blades from a range of manufacturers

Clive Turton is not easily fazed. Though recent rounds of wind auctions in India have rattled many equipment manufacturers, he remains cheerily optimistic about industry prospects.

As the Asia Pacific president of Vestas, the world's largest wind energy equipment manufacturer, Turton has been watching similar problems in other countries. For him, auctions are part of a structural shift and a sign of maturity in the industry. "The increase in competition is not unique to India," he says. "Countries are moving towards a more transparent system. And the market is responding in terms of technology."
