The largest European energy storage system using second-life and new electric vehicle (EV) batteries on a commercial building was switched on last Friday at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, delivering enough capacity to store up to 2.8MWh of electricity.

Using batteries provided by Nissan, some repurposed from its top selling LEAF electric vehicles, the bi-directional storage system is designed to store power generated by solar panels on the stadium's roof and support the local grid, where it will help manage peaks and troughs in electricity demand.
