WINDFARM FOUNDATION COMMERCIAL VIABILITY TESTING

Next-generation wind turbine foundations are being viability tested by HR Wallingford at its Oxfordshire Fast Flow Facility prior to being deployed at the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore windfarm.

The research project, which is being carried out jointly with Ørsted, seeks to refine the design of the suction bucket foundation, as part of a research project investigating scour effects and the most suitable scour protection for the novel foundation structures.

Aker Solutions has invested in floating wind power technology company Principle Power forming an alliance that expands its position in offshore oil and gas field engineering into the fast-growing renewable energy market.

Aker Solutions has an extensive track record in developing offshore oil and gas fields, with particular capabilities in floating facilities. The partnership will help bring Principle Power's technology - a floating foundation for offshore wind turbines, known as WindFloat - to a broader market, says Aker Solutions.

Corrosion protection concept offers 30% cost saving

Experience to date on E.ON’s Arkona offshore windfarm project, the first use of a new corrosion protection concept, suggests that it is significantly less expensive than conventional techniques

As first highlighted in the 3rd Quarter 2017 issue of OWJ, the concept of using thermally sprayed aluminium to prevent corrosion is widely used in the offshore oil and gas industry but has only recently begun to be used in the offshore wind industry.

Corrosion protection and management of foundations for offshore wind turbines is a potentially costly undertaking in terms of initial capital outlay and in long-term maintenance. The current solution of paint and sacrificial anodes not only slows foundation construction time but has a limited lifetime that requires frequent inspection and maintenance activities. Anodes require additional secondary steelwork to be added to a foundation, and paint requires many days to dry, slowing production times and adding cost. The first application of thermally sprayed aluminium was on the Arkona offshore windfarm, for which the foundations have now been installed.

Atkins designs on Triton Knoll

UK engineering consultancy Atkins is to design the monopile foundations for Innogy’s 860MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm off the UK east coast.

Atkins has been subcontracted by the foundation supplier – a joint venture between Smulders and Sif – to design 90 monopiles for the MHI Vestas V164-9.5MW turbines and two structures for the offshore substations.

Hywind Scotland, the world’s first floating offshore windfarm, has started to deliver electricity to the Scottish grid, having been formally opened by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

The 30 MW windfarm, operated by Statoil in partnership with Masdar, is 25 km offshore Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

German energy company Innogy SE (ETR:IGY) said Tuesday it has acquired the 50% stake of Norwegian state-owned utility Statkraft in the 860-MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm project in the UK.

"With full control over Triton Knoll, we will now develop the project further to final investment decision at our own discretion", says Hans Bünting, COO Renewables of innogy

Despite inroads by jackets and gravity-base foundations, monopiles will remain the foundation of choice for offshore wind turbines for the foreseeable future, according to a new report.

In Offshore Wind Foundations: a European Overview, Renewables Consulting Group (RCG) said that, by 2022, it expects the fully commissioned offshore wind fleet in Europe to approach 6,000 foundations, and that the greatest number of these will be monopiles rather than jackets or gravity-base foundations.

Trelleborg Completes Leg Can System Offering

Trelleborg’s engineered products operation has added to its portfolio of offshore floatover solutions with a custom designed skirt pile gripper (SPG).

Trelleborg’s SPGs can be designed to have a holding capacity of between 500MT and 3000MT and are compatible with all offshore oil and gas and wind farm HVDC jackets. The DNV GL-certified units can work at operating pressures of 200 bar and higher, and water depths of up to 250 meters.

Five Siemens Gamesa turbines of 6MW have now been installed on floating foundations in Stord, Norway, at the 30 MW “Hywind Scotland” project. From the deep fjord outside Stord on the west coast of Norway, the floating wind turbines will be towed to Scottish waters. The world´s largest floating wind project will be located 25 kilometers off the coast of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, at water depths between 90 and 120 meters.
