From a helicopter, it looks like just another North Sea oil rig, a grey cube supported by massive yellow pillars, 90 kilometers (56 miles) off western Denmark.

But the DanTysk facility is the world’s first accommodation platform for offshore wind, which is borrowing techniques and labor from the crisis-hit oil sector as it tries to cut costs and end an addiction to state subsidies.

The subject of developing a document on a standardised boat landing was identified by the International Marine Contractors Association’s (IMCA) Renewable Energy Workgroup as one of the areas where there could be benefits, both in terms of cost reduction and safety improvement, for marine operations for renewable energy.

Dredging and marine construction activities specialist Jan De Nul NV last week said it has completed the installation of the foundations for the 165-MW Nobelwind offshore wind farm in Belgium.

Jan De Nul said that all 51 foundations are now fitted with the associated transition pieces for the installation of the tower segments. The wind farm is expected to be completed in the first half of 2017.

C-Power investigates ageing process in turbine foundations

C-Power has appointed Sirris/OWI-Lab to help it investigate the ageing process in foundations for offshore windfarms. “Foundations are exposed to extreme conditions at sea,” said the companies. “Monitoring the structures will enable C-Power to keep track of the ageing process and plan maintenance work in an informed way.”

Sif Holding (AMS:SIFG), a Netherlands-based maker of steel tubulars, recorded a strong increase in first-half EBITDA, driven by its offshore wind business.

In the first six months of 2016, normalised earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 52% year-on-year to EUR 36.9 million (USD 40.6m), the company, whose products are used as foundations in the offshore wind, oil and gas industries, said on Thursday.
