All stakeholders have an interest in building on the experience of existing projects to reduce investment cost, streamline the project development process and build high performing projects. From 2014 through 2016, ABS Group served as the Certified Verification Agent (CVA) for the Block Island project, the first commercial offshore wind farm in U.S. waters. In this role, we provided an independent third-party assessment of the design, fabrication and installation of the wind farm on behalf of the client.

Operated by Statoil in partnership with Masdar, the 30 MW wind farm consists of five 6 MW turbines and is located 25 kilometers offshore Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and will power approximately 20,000 households.

Nathalie Van Driessche started as a service technician in MHI Vestas Offshore Wind back in October 2016. She explains that even though many thinks of her job as a man’s job, everyone is required to prioritize safety. That’s what makes women and men equal in this job.

To Nathalie, knowledge sharing with her colleagues is very important:

“MVOW wants us to learn. Everyone has their own qualifications, but everyone is given the chance to learn more”.

However, knowledge sharing is according to Nathalie also about sharing ideas, plans and personal issues. Life on the vessel builds trust between Nathalie and her colleagues. They don’t just work together – they live together.

Offshore Wind Energy

The first offshore wind project was installed off the coast of Denmark in 1991. Since that time, commercial-scale offshore wind facilities have been operating in shallow waters around the world, mostly in Europe. Wind power projects will continue to take shape offshore the United States. At the same time, the development of newer turbine and foundation technologies will allow wind power projects to be built in deeper waters further offshore, and the adaptation of standards and guidelines for national regulation will remain important for a national offshore wind energy resource and design database.
